The first MotoGP free practice session at Phillip Island was canceled due to heavy rain. The volatile weather did not allow the session to be held;
On Friday morning, volatile weather hit Phillip Island and rain poured down. Accordingly, the 4.45 km route was very wet, with a lot of standing water. Training was originally scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m. local time (1:45 a.m. CET). After several postponements, the session eventually had to be canceled – because it would be too dangerous to conduct the training.
Safety car driver Loris Capirossi worked his laps diligently. You can see how slippery the track is by his BMW drifts. At 12:30pm local time (3:30am CET) the decision was made to cancel training. When and whether training will be rescheduled remains unclear at the time of cancellation.
The drivers did not let their morale weaken. For example, GASGAS pilot Augusto Fernandez played a round of Uno with his crew. Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) tried his hand at photography. MotoGP legend Giacomo Agostini took a tour through the pits to chat with the riders and teams.
