The Landestheater Niederbayern opened the new season on Saturday in the former Prince-Bishop Opera House in Passau with the successful premiere of Gaetano Donizetti’s masterpiece “The Love Potion”. Directed by experienced director across Europe Stephen Medcalf, the various characters in the comedy brought about by love and its troubles are brought to their full potential by the convincing performances given by the actors choreographed by Adam Wiltshire.
Vincent Romero shined with his wonderful melodies as a country boy in love; The rich, flirtatious farmer’s wife Adina, who is also courted by the dashing sergeant Bellecourt – excellently translated by Kooyong-chum Kim – is introduced to the audience by Emily Fultz with an intense performance and vocal presence. Hyun Choi, who sold the alleged love potion as an arrogant miracle healer, also received a lot of applause. Sabine Nowak as Gianetta completed the ensemble perfectly.
As the new principal conductor, Ektoras Tartanis, who comes from Greece and has had success in many opera houses in Europe, made an excellent operatic debut: with power and precision but also passionately, he led the orchestra, chorus and soloists through the musical beauty of the evening. More shows: October 13 and 14, November 4 and 5.
