EC iDM VSV Heat Pumps had to admit defeat to their arch rivals from Klagenfurt with a score of 3:5 in the 356th Carinthian Derby. The “Eagles”, who could only convince in the first third, took several penalties and were once again unfocused on Defensive level.
First trimester
The 356th Carinthian derby began, quite against expectations, with the EC VSV team setting the rules of the game, which was aggressive in the duels and thus got off to a perfect start. After John Hughes finished completely alone in the slot, Alex Wall only had to push the rebound over the line to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the fifth minute of the match, it was high-level technician John Hughes who fed Maximilian Rebernig with a sugar pass, who scored in goalscoring style to make it 2-0. The “Eagles” completely controlled the match throughout the first third and literally restricted the “Red Jackets” in their own zone. The statistics confirm this: VSV won 55.8% of their duels, checked 15 times and gave Klagenfurt nothing – former Klagenfurt player Thomas Vallant led the way as captain, shining with four checks and three wins.
Second third
Blau-Weiß started the third well and even played aggressively during the period of pressure, as they did not have a chance to score. In addition, the 'Eagles' were physically present, did not shy away from the duel and impressed KAC. Although they were strong even when they were outnumbered, they had to accept a goal from Morsac in the 30th minute of the match when they were outnumbered – the bitter taste: Morsac actually hampered the creation of the goal by JP Lamoureux in the goal area. Despite these obvious adversities, the referees awarded a goal after reviewing the video footage. The Klagenfurt side, now clearly in control, also managed to equalize 2-2 at this stage after Lamoureux was unable to defuse a long-range shot from Abo due to lack of vision.
The third third
The “Eagles” were now clearly nervous, took several penalties and had to accept the first lead of the “Red Jackets” of the evening – Fraser, completely alone, scored 2:3 from the slot. Villach now had little control over the match, and continued to produce outnumbered situations that were clearly inferior to KAC. Matthias Fromm scored 2:4 in the 53rd minute of the match. The “Eagles”, who did not give up, reached within 3:4 of the Empty Net through Guus van Nes, but allowed an Empty Net goal from Matt Fraser, which sealed the defeat. EC VSV remains without a win in the fourth encounter of the ICE win2day Hockey League 2024/25 and has to wait for the first point.
