From January to May 2024, 104,420 passenger cars were registered in Austria, 2.2 percent more than in the same period last year. However, the numbers of electric cars are declining, according to data published by Statistics Austria on Tuesday. Accordingly, the number of newly registered cars equipped with electric engines decreased by 6.8 percent, or about 1,300 cars, to reach 17,482 cars. Three-quarters of the approvals were for commercial use.
Between January and May of this year, 13,133 (January to May 2023: 14,706) electric vehicles were registered in the commercial sector – that is, by companies, local authorities and legal entities – and the number among private users was 4,349. The increase in new registrations among individuals is an additional advantage. , with only 4,045 electric cars registered in the first five months of 2023. The reported decline in electric cars can be attributed to the commercial sector.
In addition to electric cars, registrations of cars with diesel hybrid engines also decreased (minus 5.5 percent). However, registrations of cars with gasoline hybrid engines increased (plus 13.9 percent) as well as cars with conventional engines. As for diesel cars, the increase amounted to 2.9 percent, while for gasoline cars, it recorded an increase of 0.7 percent.
