Already in the qualifying session on Wednesday they were far from the competition, on Thursday, Alexander Schmerl, Bernhard Bikl and Gernot Rumbler confidently took the European team title in Zagreb in a three-place match at 300 meters with a rifle.
The individual results added to the three-place match from the previous day are calculated as a qualifying result for the team’s classification. With 582 points from Alexander Schmerl (Lower Austria), 581 from Bernhard Bickel (Lower Austria) and 576 from Gernot Rumbler (S), the Austrian team is eleven points ahead of the second-placed Swiss. As the first European record in qualifying, the three made a total of 1,739 rounds in this system’s new mode – 3×20 instead of the previous 3×40 shots.
Excitement in the final
The final ended with medal matches. Poland took the bronze with 16:10 points against Finland, and Austria had to fight against a strong Swiss opponent in the match for the gold medal. In an incredibly exciting duel, Rumbler, Bickle and Schmerl defeated Team Switzerland 16:12.
