Twice a year, FH JOANNEUM makes technology tangible for young people as part of the initiative “FUNtech – Technology and Science on the Attack” in order to foster curiosity and the spirit of discovery. Participatory science workshops are offered, which are organized and supported by students and staff at FH JOANNEUM.
Workshops on fireflies, electronic dice and virtual reality
In the last week of school before the summer holidays, children and young people from Graz and Upper Styria were guests at the FH JOANNEUM: Among other things, they worked on electronics at the Institute of Electronic Engineering and used microcontrollers to transfer the firefly phenomenon to electronics. While building the electronic cube, they discovered how electronics and the software behind it work. The Institute of Applied Production Sciences impressed the young people with the “Man vs. Machine” workshop: They were able to process materials such as wood, stone or metal in the in-house “Smart Factory Lab” and compete with machines and systems. The workshop “Driving a car today, yesterday and tomorrow” was part of the programme at the Institute of Vehicle Technology / Automotive Engineering. The participants learned how combustion engines, electric motors and hydrogen engines work and how to assess the safety of vehicles using crash test dummies.
The FH JOANNEUM in Kapfenberg was also present at FUNtech: In the workshop “XR – Making the Invisible Visible”, augmented, virtual and mixed reality were presented in the “Smart Production Lab”. Young people were able to immerse themselves in the virtual space and test out new technologies. How to turn these new technologies into a suitable business model was covered in the second workshop entitled “StartUp! Create your business”. Ultimately, innovative business ideas must also be accompanied by a suitable business plan.
The next “FUNtech – Technology and Science for the Attack” will take place in February 2025. The FUNtech project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF).
