Firefox 131 supports so-called “URL fragment text directives.”. This makes it possible to link to text excerpts from a website. When you access the corresponding URL, the browser automatically scrolls to that point and visually highlights the selected text.
It is possible to link to a specific section of a website using a so-called canonical link (example.com#anker
) No problem. The basic requirement for this is that the element to be linked has an identifier in the code, which can be used as a link name. The somewhat unwieldy so-called “URL fragment text directives” provide much more flexibility. You can not only link anywhere without an identifier in the code, but also just via the site content; the browser also visually highlights the linked site.
It is even possible to highlight multiple sections of text. As expected, the syntax is a bit more complicated than with anchor links. The MDN web docs provide details. Documents Including examples.
With Firefox 131, this new type of URL, which already works in Chromium-based browsers and Safari, is also available in Mozilla Firefox. SupportsFirefox 131 will be released on October 1, 2024.
While Firefox does not (yet) offer a way to easily create such a link by marking a text block, CreatesThis function can actually be achieved through an add-on such as Link to text part It is updated and refreshed.
