Liverpool Football Club confirmed its ambitions for a place in the UEFA Champions League with an impressive victory over Manchester United. Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Man United, who are unbeaten in 11 matches, 7-0 (1-0) on Sunday after a stellar game. The Reds’ biggest success was in this prestigious comparison.
It was also Manchester United’s heaviest Premier League defeat. Double packets from Cody Gacbo (43’/50′), Darwin Nunez (47’/75′) and Mohamed Salah (66’/83′) and a goal from Roberto Firmino (88′) secured the home crowd at Anfield Road. For the record win that Liverpool deserves. Salah is now the historic top scorer for Liverpool in the Premier League with 129 goals in 205 matches. Marcel Sabitzer came on for Man United in the 77th minute.
Liverpool dominated the match from the start. ManUnited only played on before half-time, but then Gakpo scored to give the hosts the lead. After the break and Nunez’s quick goal, Klopp’s side were clearly superior again and really showed their increasingly frustrated opponents.
Due to torrential rain, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson hopped the ball in just under an hour when the score was 3-0, but ManUnited were unable to capitalize on the moment. In the end, it was all about damage limitation for the third-placed Premier League side. After the goal to make it 7-0, a spectator ran onto the field, but was immediately removed by security personnel.
Liverpool, who have often fluctuated in form this season, improved to fifth in the Premier League table and are close to qualifying for the Champions League once again. The Reds are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur but have played one less game than Tottenham.
