Liverpool maintained its lead in the English Premier League. Dutch coach Arne Sloat's side beat Chelsea 2-1 (1-0) at home at Anfield on Sunday, moving past defending champions Manchester City, who previously won 2-1 (1-1) over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Mohamed Salah (29th minute) from a penalty kick and Curtis Jones (51st minute) gave the Reds their seventh victory in their eighth league match. Nicholas Jackson (48th) scored Chelsea's equalizer shortly after the end of the first half. Initially, Jackson had a goal disallowed due to an alleged offside situation. But after a VAR check, the equalizer was awarded.
VAR was used for the second time in favor of the visitors from London. After Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez collided with Liverpool striker Jones, the referee initially indicated a penalty kick. But the goalkeeper played the ball first during the tackle. The yellow card was also drawn against Sanchez.
Directly in front of Man City
In the final stage, Chelsea relied on offensive changes, but even in the hectic stoppage time, neither Pedro Neto nor Enzo Fernandez were able to seriously threaten Liverpool's cohesive defence. After the eighth round of the English Premier League, Liverpool leads the standings with 21 points, ahead of Manchester City (20) and Arsenal (17).
Manchester City previously beat Wolverhampton thanks to a header from defender John Stones in stoppage time. Pep Guardiola's side fell behind early thanks to a Jurgen Strand Larsen goal (7') and were forced to stagnate until the end after Jusco Gvardiol's equalizer (33') despite oppressive control and some chances.
