Washington Informed sources reported that former US Vice President Mike Pence wants to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination next Wednesday. President Donald Trump’s former running mate will begin his race entry with a video and speech in Iowa, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency on Wednesday. Pence’s statement was initially unavailable.
The conservative Pence has increasingly distanced himself from his former boss. The latter had expressed his anger at Pence’s refusal to support his move against the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
With Pence, six candidates on the Republican side have now declared or formally submitted their candidacy for a vote in November 2024. Trump has a huge lead in the polls: in RealClearPolitics he was recently at 53% among Republicans and Pence is less than 4%.
