Lille OSC ended PSG’s dominance in France. Christophe Galtaire’s side beat Angers 2-1 on Sunday, successfully defending top of the Ligue 1 table and clinching the trophy for the fifth time in the club’s history. Lille was the last champion in 2011. Paris Saint-Germain scored a 2-0 victory over Brest, nil, and a single point deficit could not be replaced.
Lille is the second champions from outside Paris Saint-Germain since 2013. The Parisians have reached the first three places in a row since the Monaco victory in 2017. Lille’s 24th victory for this season was decided by Jonathan David (10) and veteran striker Burak Yilmaz (45) +1). The 35-year-old Turk scored for the 16th time this season. After being substituted, he had to shiver again at the end because Angelo Fulgini (92) managed to score the next goal.
Strong collegiality
“It’s a success for group cohesion.” Jose Fonte, 37, Portuguese captain, said, “We put it together, we had a great season and we deserved the title.” Paris Saint-Germain finished second thanks to an own goal by Roman Fever (37) and a goal by Kylian Mbappe (71). Neymar missed a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Both teams are firmly in “First Division”.
