Whether by road or rail, numerous construction sites currently make it difficult to get around the city. The restrictions that have been in place for several years will soon be lifted – the U2 will run regularly again between the Seestadt and Karlsplatz stations from autumn.
A year later, the U2 line will start running again between Schottentor and Karlsplatz stations in September. According to Wiener Linien, the reason for the delay was unexpected construction challenges. It is still unclear whether this led to additional costs. In any case, it will be completed soon, after just over three years of construction.
The road is prepared for U5
“During this time, the track section was extensively modernized and prepared for the new, fully automated U5. For example, there are new, fully automatic screen doors that will be on the U5 in the future,” says Deborah Gehrl from Wiener Linien.
The track systems were renewed throughout the entire section and a total of 4.8 kilometres of track were replaced. 144 platform barrier doors and around 16,000 square metres of glass were installed. The subway control technology was prepared for the fully automatic operation of the U5. The first section of the U5 between Karlsplatz and Frankplatz is scheduled to open in 2026. It will take some time for the U5 to reach Elterleinplatz in Hernals. The comprehensive U2/U5 project – the U2 to Wienerberg will be in operation in the future – is scheduled to be completed by 2035 at the latest.
