From Glassner to Herzog: How Austria’s coach exports work

Austrian coaches are having a difficult time internationally, but are still in demand. KURIER provides an overview of local coaches who have been tracked down or chased away.

Ralph Hessenhuttl He was replaced as Southampton manager in November 2022, when he has a contract until 2024. The 55-year-old from Styria is often a candidate in England, but he is also considering leaving the coaching job.

Oliver Glassner He led Eintracht Frankfurt to victory in the Europa League and thus to their first participation in the Champions League. After the cup final against Leipzig, the relationship between Frankfurt and the 48-year-old came to an end.

Uday Hutter Recorded in the history of Gladbach as the most expensive training misunderstanding, the club brought him from Frankfurt in 2021 for 7.5 million euros. On 14 May 2022, after winning 5-1 in the last game of the season against Hoffenheim, the 53-year-old announced his departure.

Gerhard Stober He expired his contract with the New York Red Bulls on Monday. The 46-year-old has been in the MLS for two years and has had a poor start to the season – after 11 games, he’s bottom of the Eastern League. Strooper can land in Salzburg.

Dominic Thalhammer She went to LASK as the successful head coach of the Austrian women’s national team and then to Cercle Bruges. The collaboration ended in September 2022, and Ostend took it on in November. The 52-year-old landed with the Belgians.

Myron Muslik He was Thalamer’s assistant at Cercle Brugge and has been the technical director there ever since. The 40-year-old finished eighth and is still on track to qualify for the Conference League. In Austria he worked for FAC and Ried.

Canadian Damir He was released by Croatian First Division club Sibenik on 24 September after about 100 days in charge and reinstated in February. The 52-year-old sits tenth and last with the club, which was acquired by Klagenfurt investor Zeljko Karagica, with three laps to go. In the cup Sibenik knocked out Zagreb and is in the final against Split.

Andrew Herzog He was already an assistant coach for the US team and head of the team in Israel. In 2022, his first involvement with the club ended with Admira being relegated. He’s been Jurgen Klinsmann’s assistant coach again since March – this time in South Korea.

Ekrem Dag He is fighting with Göztepe (and striker Kvasina) for promotion to the Turkish First League. The 42-year-old former team player arrived as Basaksehir’s assistant coach in September.

Andrew Weiland He has been in Belgium since July 2022. The 39-year-old former LASK coach is at Beerschot in Ligue 2 and is in third place with one round to go from promoted Molenbeek, but he should stay.

Michael Petrovich, the 65-year-old Serbian with Sturm history and an Austrian passport, coached Sturm from 2003 to 2006 and then went to Japan. He has been coaching Sapporo since 2018.

Michael Winsauer Fight for promotion to the Swiss League Two (Challenge League). The 40-year-old from Tyrol finished third with Baden 1897 in the so-called Promotion League.
