Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte wants to continue teaching at a school in The Hague in his new position as NATO commander.
Rutte told reporters in The Hague on Friday that he wanted to check if that was possible “in some way.” The right-wing liberal politician is soon to be appointed NATO Secretary General, and will succeed Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg on October 1.

Moving to Brussels
Rutte was Prime Minister of the Netherlands for almost 14 years. However, the trained historian continued to teach social studies once a week at a high school in The Hague. It is scheduled to move to the official headquarters of the Secretary-General of NATO in Brussels. But he said he wanted to return to The Hague at the end of the week.

Political life and future plans
In the summer of 2023, the center-right coalition collapsed and Rutte announced his retirement from politics. He said at the time that he also wanted to work full-time as a teacher. But the United States, among other countries, asked him several times to run for the position of Secretary General of NATO.
Now Mark Rutte will bring his experience leading four multi-party Dutch governments to the international stage as the new Secretary General of NATO.
