Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has arrived in everyday work. However, a large-scale study shows that there is a clear gap between levels of the hierarchy in terms of commitment, expectations and benefits.

Regarding use, expectations and benefits Generative Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Employees and their bosses have distinctly different views. At least that's what the update and expander shows GenAI study From an IT service provider Adiso. When surveying a total of 778 people from senior and middle management levels and employees in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, it was found that managers are already routinely working with modern tools, while the rest of the workforce appears to still be struggling. Artificial Intelligence has the potential to significantly transform the world of work.

Huge gap in usage

According to the survey, the C-level of companies, i.e. top management, is already using GenAI regularly. 29% say they use different tools several times a day. As for middle management, it is only twelve percent, while for the rest of the employees it is less than that, reaching eleven percent. There is a clear gap here between different levels of the company, but at the same time also between the actual use of technology and expectations.

Differentiated time saving

As the study collapsed, management had much lower expectations of generative AI than their subordinates. This is particularly evident with regard to the expected time savings: while 92% of employees expect time off, this figure is only 68% in middle management and 69% at the top level. This suggests that managers view GenAI as a complement or support, while employees tend to use it as a tool that relieves them of some work.

However, a reality check shows that one in three managers (34 percent) say they save more than five hours of work time per week using GenAI. In contrast, this percentage is only 13% of middle management and only 5% of employees.

Expectations of senior managers are likely to come true

Executive-level managers are also satisfied: 35 percent of senior management believe that their expectations from GenAI have been very met. However, only 19% of mid-level and 16% of employees say the same.

Training is essential to be able to exploit the potential of AI

“GenAI has become a top priority,” he sums up. Tim StrochneiderHead of GenAI at adesso SE. “Not only are companies thinking about how and where they can improve their business processes with ChatGPT & Co. One in three C-level managers use these tools several times a day for help or suggestions. The rest of the company is much more conservative.” The director says that this different approach is definitely due to the fact that many people are not adequately trained in GenAI. Because if you don't know how to use technology properly, you won't be able to exploit its potential.

Ströschneider is also convinced that generative AI is definitely changing the way we work – “It's changing business,” he adds. “It is essential that companies experiment with this technology and determine the best use cases for their specific needs.” But it is at least as important that companies invest in “AI readiness” for all employees.
