“Imagine if there were only white German players” – Göring Eckardt fumed in the post

BVice President Katrin Goering-Eckardt (Green Party) sparked online outrage with a post about the German national team's European Football Championship match against Hungary (2-0).
“This team is truly amazing. Imagine for a moment if there were only white German players,” she wrote on X, adding three rainbow emojis to her post.
Within a few hours, thousands of mostly negative comments were collected on her post. For example, FDP MP Wolfgang Kubicki recommended the green politician delete her post. “I really worry when people in Germany are judged based on the color of their skin. The colleague should quickly delete this text,” he wrote under Goering-Eckardt’s post.
In the run-up to the European Championship, a WDR survey on the composition of the national team caused sharp criticism. Two-thirds of those surveyed said they were impressed by the fact that there were now so many footballers with an immigrant background playing. However, in the same poll, one in five people said they thought it would be better if there were more white players playing for the German national team.

National coach Nagelsmann criticized the poll with harsh words. “I hope I never have to read about such a bad poll again,” the 36-year-old said at the beginning of June.
Germany won their second qualifying round match in the European Championship 2-0 over Hungary in the evening, thus qualifying early to the round of 16. The goals were scored by Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan. In the first round match, the German Football Association team defeated the Scottish team 5-1.
