OMV had concluded a “long-term contract” with US LNG supplier Cheniere Energy to supply liquefied gas, but did not reveal any details about the term.
Climate Protection Minister Leonor Gevsler (Green Party) sees OMV’s recent liquid gas deal with US company Cheniere Energy as a contribution to the diversification of Austria’s energy supply. In addition, Austria is working to make itself more independent from Russian gas. The politician said on Friday on the sidelines of a press conference that she had no knowledge of the duration of the contract because it was a private law agreement.
OMV had entered into a “long-term contract” with US LNG supplier Cheniere Energy to supply LNG, but did not reveal any details about the term. The first delivery has been agreed at the end of 2029. The contractually agreed amount of 850,000 tons per year is equivalent to about 11 terawatt-hours (TWh), and therefore about one-eighth of Austria’s current annual gas consumption.
Europe aims to be climate neutral by 2050, and Austria wants to achieve this goal by 2040. In Europe and Austria, people will no longer make any money from gas, Goessler says. (Abba)
