Google Photos is canceling unlimited cloud storage for all users on June 1st – only Pixel smartphone owners are allowed to keep it. We’ll explain to you the alternatives you now have to back up your photos and why you should start restoring data as soon as possible.
Unlimited storage, automatic sorting and quick comparison with smartphone photo album: For many years, Google Photos has been, for many years, the # 1 cloud solution for saving their photos. But now there is a bitter turning point:
Starting June 1, 2021, every Google Account will have the same storage space for photo backups, that’s 15GB for everything: GmailAnd the Google photosAnd the Google Drive. According to Google, the reason for this is the growing demand for online storage. Only Pixel smartphone users can keep saving their photos in the app without any restrictions. Everyone else must find a replacement or Google One Subscribe, Google’s New Cloud Storage Service:
This is how much Google One costs
- The 100GB package costs 1.99 € per month
- 200 GB costs 2.99 € per month
- If you need more, you can get a 2 TB storage option, which costs € 9.99 per month
- For 99.99 € per month, there is 10 TB of storage space
- The 20 and 30 TB packages are available for 199.99 and 299.99 € per month, respectively
With an average file size of 4MB per image, you can save around 25,000 photos in a 100GB package.
Method 1: Now download everything
Good to know: All images that you have already saved to Google Photos will not require any additional data in the future either. This also applies to all photos that you upload to Google Photos from your device before June 1, 2021.
So there is the possibility that you will have all the important photos until the end of the month Google photos Thus making the backup as extensive as possible. However, this is not a permanent solution, as it is not possible to add new files after the deadline. In addition, Google will delete your photos at the latest if you exceed the storage limit for more than 2 years or if you have been inactive for 24 months! So take care of one now Support from your photos.
Second method: clean up Google storage
There is no free alternative to Google Photos that promises unlimited storage. So if you are satisfied with the remaining 15 GB of memory in the future, you should clean your memory by using Google services once. To that end, there will be a tool starting in mid-2021 that will make it easy to manage photos and videos. at Google Drive You can quickly feel the large space hogs by clicking on the “Storage Space” button on the left. Don’t forget to empty the trash, as it also counts from 15 GB.
But Gmail also saves a little space: search “Largest: 4MB” to find all emails larger than 4MB. It can then be marked and deleted with one swipe. This way, an additional picture can be saved for each message removed.
Method 3: Switch to an alternate file host
You may also want to consider an alternative cloud solution. Or maybe you already have access to online storage and just don’t use it?
- Amazon Pictures: If you are an Amazon Prime user, you can save and organize your photo collection online in its original size. Similar to Google Photos, you can edit photos directly in the browser or apply filters and effects. However: Videos cannot be saved for free or only 5 GB of them – and they will disappear quickly. For this you need paid storage as if you weren’t an Amazon Prime customer. On Amazon, you pay 1.99 € per month for 100GB and 9.99 € for 1 TB.
- Microsoft OneDrive: Microsoft also offers OneDrive An often forgotten online storage service. All Office 365 license users automatically have storage on Microsoft’s servers. Microsoft 365 Single, for example, has 1 TB of online storage that you can also use in your photo collection. The Microsoft 365 Family Family License provides a total of 6 TB (1,000 GB per person) storage space. After uploading the photos, OneDrive helps you organize and find the photos, using features like image search, tags, and albums. However, you should do without the great image processing functions in Microsoft’s solution.
- Cloud network storage: 2GB with Dropbox, 5GB with OneDrive, 15GB with Google Drive: What if you only have 22GB in one place? Or even better: How about just under 200 GB? Or is there no size limit at all? Free Claudio It makes this exactly possible. Because the program combines your cloud storage into a large shared drive. This way, you theoretically get unlimited cloud storage. We’ll explain exactly how it works.
Fourth method: local and NAS backups
You get the most control when creating backups locally or in your home network. This variant is of course also related to costs, but external hard drives are very cheap now. In addition, do not make yourself dependent on a big company and you can save your photos in their original quality instead of them in a zip.
Good 2 TB external hard drives are available for just over 50 euros, which with 4MB images provide enough space for around half a million files. So instead of a yearly payment, one-off expenses are sufficient. The necessary backup software is freely available: Omi Backoper Not only does it save pictures but all files from computer to external memory.
Obviously, buying a NAS server is more convenient. You can save your photos securely in your cloud – and access them from anywhere.
