Electricity for the ÖBB starter house is now produced directly on the roof. The trainees gave a helping hand and installed 26 units of the rooftop photovoltaic system by themselves. About 11 MWh of electricity is generated this year.
“The railways of tomorrow need the latest technology and professionals who can handle the challenges of the future. That’s why we train these professionals ourselves and really focus on sustainability during apprenticeships,” underscores Silvia Angelo, member of the Infrastructure Management Board at ÖBB. The training is not only theoretical but also includes exciting practical projects, such as this photovoltaic system. “Our trainees learn how to use the centralized technology of the future while ensuring more green electricity,” says Angelo.
ÖBB Infrastructure Management Board Member Johan Blow confirms that trainees make an important contribution to sustainable energy generation. ÖBB is one of the largest climate protection companies in Austria and has been a pioneer in electric mobility for 100 years. Climate protection is therefore part of our DNA. Since 2018, ÖBB has relied on 100% green traction. Since 2019, the stations and operating facilities have also been supplied with electricity from 100 percent renewable energy,” says Pluy proudly.
The goal of ÖBB is to increase the self-draft supply from 60 to 80 percent by 2030 by expanding and upgrading water, solar and wind power plants as well as strong partner power plants. The share of self-sufficiency of operating systems will increase from eleven to 67 percent.
