Frankfurt Since October 2022, the stock markets have been on a strong upward trend. For example, the broad US leading index S&P 500 is close to its January 2022 record.
Despite the Fed’s restrictive monetary policy, the US economy is doing surprisingly well. In July, 187,000 new jobs were created outside of agriculture. In past crises, the economy reacted prematurely to raising interest rates. This pattern is different because of strong fiscal measures by the government.
In addition, in August 2022, the US passed an investment package of about US$50 billion with tax credits to “create incentives to help manufacture semiconductors” (CHIPS Act).
