Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic has once again confirmed that winning the gold medal was a dream come true. Bencic, ranked 11th in the world, won her first gold medal after defeating Czech Marketa Vondrosova in the final of the Tokyo Olympics.
The 24-year-old Bencic will be happy with her career even if it ends now. “Well, I think winning the Olympic gold, it’s really like a dream come true. Of course you dreamed about it, but you’re not really going to get it, get it now and all.
It was the first Olympics I participated in. For me, it was not surprising – as I said – but I am very happy that I made it. It’s almost unbelievable, Bencic said. “Now I have a feeling people will always ask: What are you going to do next? What is your goal, the pressure and all that.
For me, it’s amazing to be able to make this happen. If I finish my career tomorrow, I will be very happy with everything.”
But Belinda Bencic wants more
Bencic skipped the Montreal Masters but will be back in action this week at the Cincinnati Masters.
On her first appearance in Cincinnati, Bencic was ready to meet Vondrosova. Bencic’s next goal is to win one of the Grand Slams. “Of course I want to play anyway, keep playing. I don’t want to be like that now, after that I want to win that, then I have to win these Grand Slams and everything.”
“I think it’s still very difficult in women’s tennis. I think everyone plays very well. I really want to play freely and have some fun. I’ve already fulfilled my dreams.
I can really relax and enjoy playing my tennis and still work hard for what’s to come. I don’t want to define my next dream. “Photo: [email protected]
