Sweden concede their first defeat in the fifth match of the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland.
The Trikronen team lost 3-2 to the United States in extra time in Tampere on Saturday, finishing second behind hosts Finland in Group B of Austria.
Adam Gowdett, who scored 1-1 (8th), decides the game with his goal after 4:48 minutes of extra time. Nate Schmidt contributed to America’s third goal.
Rasmus Tale (3rd) and Carl Grundstrom (47th) meet for Sweden.
Switzerland and Germany in the quarterfinals
Denmark retained their place in the quarterfinals of Group A in Helsinki, beating France 3-0. KAC goalkeeper Sebastian Tom saved all 19 shots scored by French.
Switzerland and Germany are firmly in the quarterfinals thanks to Danes’ victory.
