Imprisoned American journalists: Russia refuses to release them

According to its own reports, the US government has made a new offer to Moscow to release the Americans, Ivan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, who are imprisoned in Russia.

“In recent weeks, we have made a new and significant proposal to release Paul and Ivan. This proposal was rejected by Russia,” US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on Tuesday. He did not disclose any details about the offer.

Moscow did not react, Miller continued. This is obviously a rejection. Miller asserted that Evan and Whelan were wrongfully imprisoned.

The Attorney General’s Office alleges that he collected state secrets about the activities of a Russian security firm “at the direction of the US side.”

Gershkovich and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, deny he spied there. The Moscow District Court recently extended Gershkovich’s pre-trial detention until January 30.

American Whelan has been jailed in Russia for years — and for espionage.
