Language Confusion – You've already immersed yourself in the Egyptian Bazaar in Istanbul and have already walked past your best address. It is hidden in one of the entrance columns when you come from the direction of Galata Bridge. Plates of gourmet bibles like Gault Millau and the Michelin Guide flank a modest wooden door, with thin neon lettering above it. “Bandili Restaurant”.
Behind it is a narrow one-way staircase, and the artistically tiled turquoise, blue and white staircase is an introduction to what awaits you in the restaurant itself – because each room is tiled in these colors but in different patterns. In 1901, Bandele Cobanoglu opened his first restaurant, where he received, among others, the founder of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Ataturk. After its destruction during the Istanbul massacre in 1955, Cobanoglu moved to a new location at the entrance to the Egyptian Bazaar. There are also celebrities on the guest list, such as Queen Elizabeth II and Audrey Hepburn. According to his recipes, Chef Abdullah Sevim prepares tender, buttery lamb or kebabs on a charcoal grill. The perfect ending is tea with a view of the Golden Horn.
