Innersloth Teases Among Us VR During The Game Awards 2021

At the Game Awards 2021, virtual reality specialist Schell Games announced the beginnings of the adaption of a VR version of the popular video game Among Us. The 25-second trailer reveal at the said event was used to tease the new first-person version of the hit social deduction game. Following the Among Us PlayStation 5, PS4, and Xbox releases this December 14th, fans are ecstatic to hear about the VR news. The VR adaptation is part of a collaboration with the consulting firm, Robot Teddy, who is responsible for overseeing the game’s jump to new platforms.

Among Us skyrocketed as one of the most popular multiplayer games in the year 2020. InnerSloth and the developers of Among Us were probably as surprised as everyone else at the rapid rise of their creation two years after its release. It boasts a user base growth of 1600% in just 8 months and has snagged major awards, like the Favorite Video Game at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards 2021, along with the Best Mobile Game Award and the Best Multiplayer Award at the Game Awards 2020.

Among Us is fairly straightforward. Similar to games like Mafia and Werewolf, a group of players has to guess the identity of the so-called impostor. The impostor team members, on the other hand, have to try and murder crew members while sabotaging crew tasks. These “core mechanics” are to be retained in the upcoming VR release, staying true to the essence of the social deduction game. And this won’t be the first time that this mechanic is played out on VR since the likes of Ubisoft’s Werewolves Within have long been available on the market. Additionally, Schell Games is also well-known for developing the multi-awarded I Expect You To Die series, a similarly goofy, quick-thinking VR escape room game.

Through VR technology’s advanced PCB routing, InnerSloth and Schell Games were able to create a more immersive player experience. We can expect that the use of a first-person perspective, as opposed to the regular game’s top-down view, will be a huge advantage to the impostors because cabin crew players won’t have the same awareness of their surroundings compared to the original game. Moreover, it will likely require a bit more dexterity than the PC, console, and mobile versions of the game.

The Among Us remake will be available on a few different VR headsets, including the Meta (formerly Oculus) Quest headsets, and Valve Index. The game will also be playable on PlayStation consoles with the corresponding PSVR headsets. While there hasn’t been any release date attached to the news, we can imagine that it’ll launch alongside the slew of games lined up for early next year.

While waiting for the Among Us VR release, you can opt for the 2D version of the game available on almost every gaming platform. Alternatively, you can check out these four new games coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC, which were also announced during the most recent Game Awards.
