Roger Schmidt’s and Benfica’s dreams were shattered at the San Siro. The Portuguese league leaders missed the semi-finals of the Champions League despite 3: 3 (1: 1) at Inter Milan. 20 years ago, the Nerazzurri would have a city duel with Milan in the last four.
Nicolò Barella (14), who already scored in the 2-0 win for Inter in the first leg, world champions Lautaro Martinez (66) and Joaquín Correa (78) provided Milan’s goals against a fantastic backdrop. Frederic Ursnes’s equalizing goal (38 minutes) gave Benfica hope once again. The goals of Antonio Silva (86) and Peter Moses (90 + 5) came late.
UEFA Champions League: Milan duel in the semi-finals
Inter Milan and Simone Inzaghi will meet in the first leg of the semi-finals on May 10th. The second leg rises after a week. In 2003, Milan narrowly emerged victorious after two draws and went on to win the championship.
For Schmidt’s team, the opportunity is lost at the moment. After a long and brilliant season, the Portuguese, led by the former Bundesliga coach, has been noticeably away lately. Also in the league, the lead over FC Porto has shrunk to four points.
The beginning did not go well in Milan. Inter set the tone without international substitute Robin Goossens and star striker Romelu Lukaku in the starting line-up. After the equalizer, the guests were right in the game and should have been awarded a penalty kick after a foul on Aursnes (55th place).
