DOHA (SID) — A great coaching era in Portuguese football seems to be coming to an end: according to a report by A Bola, national coach Fernando Santos will hand over the captaincy of the Portuguese national team.
Silicao had failed in the World Cup in Qatar in the quarter-finals due to the surprise of the Moroccan team. Santos’ decision to only use superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as a clown caused debate.
The 68-year-old football coach, whose retirement has yet to be officially confirmed, made history with the country’s first European title in 2016. He can also boast of winning the 2019 Nations League. Santos started the job eight years ago and still has a contract until 2024.
There also remains uncertainty about Ronaldo’s future in the national team, with the 37-year-old having been one of Santos’ best performers for years, who shortly after disappointment in Qatar showed willingness to continue his work. “I have already spoken to the president of the federation,” he said. “When we return to Portugal we will talk about my contract seriously and calmly. Resignation is not part of our vocabulary.”
