Apple has released the final version of iOS 17.1 for the iPhone for download – later than expected already. Just before the weekend, the American technology group published a candidate for the second version after apparently finding errors in the first version that Apple wanted to fix before distributing the program to all users. It is not known what changes the RC-2 software version brought with it.
The most important innovation in iOS 17.1 is online AirDrop. Data transfer between two AirDrop-enabled devices should still begin if the devices are located directly next to each other. However, users do not have to wait for the data transfer process to finish. Alternatively, content can be watched over a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
Apple has also improved the standby mode introduced with iOS 17, which takes effect when the iPhone is in landscape mode and charging. After installing iOS 17.1, the user can choose whether the screen should turn off “automatically” every 20 seconds or not at all. The Apple Music software update brings simple innovations, like favorite content.
watchOS 10.1: Improved navigation for Apple Watch
With watchOS 10.1, Apple is adding a gesture to the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Pressing the thumb and index finger on the hand you’re wearing the Watch is meant to improve menu navigation. These hand gestures aren’t really new to the Apple Watch. It can be found under Assistive Touch on all Series 4 and SE (1st generation) models. Also new to the Apple Watch is the ability to transfer contact information from iPhone via NameDrop.
However, macOS 14.1 (Sonoma) doesn’t offer any visible innovations for computers running Apple’s operating system. In addition to the iPhone’s well-known AirDrop improvement, iPad owners are getting support for the Apple Pencil, which was newly introduced last week.
In addition to new functionality, Apple updates also provide bug fixes. Security improvements are also possible. Installation is therefore recommended for all users with compatible iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Apple TV devices.
