Following warnings of famine in the northern Gaza Strip, Israel today announced the transfer of aid to the area in 50 trucks. The Coordination Body of Government Activities in the Israeli Territories, which is responsible for Palestinian affairs, said that the aid includes, among other things, food, water and medicine.
The previous day, the US government increased pressure on Israel in light of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. She added that if the situation for people in the coastal sector does not improve significantly within 30 days, there is a risk of violating US laws related to military support.
Now, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has warned of famine as winter approaches. “Unfortunately, hunger and malnutrition are very likely,” Lazzarini told a news conference in Berlin.
Lazzarini said that hunger in the Palestinian coastal strip is “artificial,” and called for convoys of trucks loaded with food to be allowed to pass through the border centers into the Gaza Strip. Children in particular suffer from a hopeless situation, living among sewage and garbage.
