According to informed sources, Australia wants to buy nuclear submarines from the United States in view of the tensions with China.
According to informed sources, Australia is arming itself with nuclear-powered submarines from the United States of America against the backdrop of China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Two US government officials familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday that three Virginia-class submarines will be stationed in Western Australia from 2030, and there is an option to purchase two more.
The delivery of the boats of British design and American technology is part of the Aukus security agreement between the governments in Washington, Canberra and London.
The cancellation of the submarine order created turbulence
US President Joe Biden will receive the heads of state and government of Australia and Great Britain in San Diego next week and discuss the delivery of nuclear-powered submarines and other high-tech weapons to Australia, a US representative said. The Pentagon referred a Reuters request for comment to the US presidential office, which declined to confirm details of an upcoming announcement.
Last year, Australia withdrew an order from French shipbuilding group Naval to build submarines and instead agreed to supply related technologies from the United States and Great Britain. The cancellation of the 2016 €40 billion order led to serious disagreements between Australia and France.
