After the defeat to Japan (2:4), Kuntz criticized his players personally, which prompted officials in the Turkish Football Association around President Mehmet Büyükçi to terminate the contract with the German coach, according to the DHA.
According to Büyükükçi’s statement, “Kuntz shot himself in the foot,” the news agency quoted the president as saying.
It appears that Kuntz himself was informed by phone that he was no longer allowed to stand on the sidelines of the Turkish national team. An official announcement is scheduled to follow Tuesday evening.
So far only Stefan Kuntz has been informed, while his assistants around Kenan Kocak have not received any information about what will happen to them in the future.
Le potential successor candidate
Various names are being discussed in the Turkish media as possible candidates to succeed Koontz.
If officials in Turkey want to continue with a foreign coach, former national coach Joachim Loew may come to the fore. At least that’s what the Dubai Health Authority said.
However, after Kuntz’s ultimately unsuccessful commitment, it seems questionable whether a foreign coach will be chosen again.
Kuntz takes over as national coach
Then the other candidates are Sergen Yalcin, Aykut Kocaman, Reza Çalimpay, and Abdullah Avcı. On the other hand, Turkish coaching legend Fatih Termin should not be on the list of potential successors to Kuntz.
As for Kuntz himself, the next national team coaching job could be waiting for him in the near future. The coach, who became a two-time European champion with the German U-21 national team, is in talks with the German Football Association to take over the position of national coach.
