KAC won 2-1 away to Vienna Capitals in Round 49 of the win2day Ice Hockey League.
This means that the Carinthians team cannot be replaced at the top of the table and is guaranteed a victory in the first round. For the first time in 13 years, the defending champions will finish the regular season in first place and have home-field advantage if they reach the final.
KAC took control at first, then the Capitals responded
The Klagenfurt team dominated the first part of the match in the federal capital and took advantage of the first majority situation to take the lead. Manuel Ganal (9th/PP) scores over the shoulder of Caps goalkeeper Sten and gets hundreds of KAC fans cheering in a sold-out Steffl Arena.
The Capitals also created some shots on goal in the second third. The duel turns out to be offensive and equal, but at the moment there are no other goals. The Vienna team only appeared on the scoreboard in the last section. Former KAC player Rok Tekar (42) converts a strike to level the score at 1-1.
Frazier hits a shorthanded one for the win
In the final stretch, KAC center Rafael Herberger gave Vienna a power play with a header against Dominik Hackl and the resulting match misconduct penalty. However, Matt Frazier (57./SH) converted a counterattack, started by a Donohue slide at his own blue line, into the decision.
With 99 points, KAC crosses the 100-point mark and has an eleven-point lead over Fehervár AV19 with two games remaining. The Vienna team remained in eleventh place in the standings with 48 points.
