Is Berlin's KaDeWe now vegan? Germany's most famous department store is to stop selling meat and sausages with immediate effect! All employees in the department received notice of termination on Friday.
The gourmet level of the luxury temple is known far beyond the capital. The sixth floor of the KaDeWe houses the largest delicatessen department in Europe: around 33,000 different items are available on 7,000 square metres. These include 1,300 types of cheese and 400 types of bread, while 500 lobsters and 10,000 oysters are sold every week.
Also available on the gourmet floor: 1,800 types of sausages and meats. But quite unexpectedly, this came to an end – the expenses of the department had been covered since Friday morning. BZ has learned: The sausage and meat products department is closed with immediate effect! The affected employees were informed in the morning and received a notice of termination.
The KaDeWe press office said briefly about BZ: “The information you have is correct.” The dry justification for the measure: “Staff changes are a prerequisite for handing over business operations to the new operator.”
There was no answer to these questions about exactly what led to this sudden decision about what will be sold on the site in the future. But meat dishes are still sold in restaurants!
The Thai Central Group acquired the entire KaDeWe Group only in June; Asians previously owned a 50.1 percent stake in the company. At the time, it was said that no one should worry about their jobs.
“The signed agreement will not change anything for the workforce,” a KaDeWe spokeswoman promised in response to BZ’s request. Shortly before the acquisition, the division responsible for online trading was dissolved and all employees were laid off.
It was announced on Friday that more jobs will be cut across the entire KaDeWe group (including Alsterhaus in Hamburg and Oberpollinger in Munich). A total of 100 employees will have to leave, including 70 from management.
