In La Liga, Barcelona and Real Madrid are once again at the top of the standings and once again competing for the title in Spain. And now there is another version of El Clasico between Real and Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup, the King’s Cup.
The first leg will be played on Thursday evening in Madrid at 9 pm. Especially for Barcelona, the Spanish Cup should have added meaning after the early defeat in the European Cup against Manchester United. Ideally, Xavi’s side could at least secure the national double after having had a rather poor international season for the financially struggling senior club.
More recently, perennial rivals Real and Barcelona only met in January 2023 in the Spanish Super Cup. The Catalans prevailed 3-1 in front of nearly 70,000 fans in Saudi Arabia. Javi, Robert Lewandowski and Pedri gave Barcelona a 3-0 lead in the first 70 minutes or so, so Karim Benzema’s goal in extra time only had statistical value. However, Lewandowski and Badri will be out on Thursday.
