Old Music – Reinterpreted

Early Music in Concert. David Bergmüller, lute. Works by David Bergmüller, Enemond Gaultier, Denis Gaultier, François Dufault, René Mezzango, Beckforth, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger, Robert de Vessy (recorded on 28 April in Studio 3 at the ORF Landesstudio Tirol in Innsbruck)

With “Know Yourself”, David Bergmüller presented a program of remarkable variety and stylistic breadth on April 28. The concert was held as part of the Close Listening Festival, which focused on the Tyrolean lute player.

For Bergmüller, his music is not about themes such as ancient or contemporary, but rather a synthesis of different musical styles and expressions. In this program he has assembled a selection of pieces by French composers enriched with works from the Italian workshop and his own compositions.

Born in Hall in Tirol in 1989, David Bergmüller discovered the oud while training at the Tyrolean State Conservatory. He studied with Hopkinson Smith and Rolf Lislevand. This was followed by degrees from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the University of Music of Trossingen. His masterful performances range from historically informed/inspired performance practice to new compositions for the oud. Not only is the Tyrolean a soloist and continuo player, but in 2018 he was appointed one of the youngest professors of music at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne, succeeding Konrad Junghanel.
