According to the Interfax agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has arrived in China for four-way talks on Afghanistan. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, Lavrov rarely left his country. In Tunsi, he is currently scheduled to meet with top ambassadors to the United States, China and Pakistan. Lavrov is already scheduled to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Wednesday, according to Russian state-owned Tass.
China has been providing political support to Russia in the conflict in Ukraine and refuses to condemn the invasion. On the contrary, Beijing portrays the United States and NATO as the main causes of the crisis. From the US side, US Special Envoy to Afghanistan Tom West is expected to attend, Washington said.
There will also be a meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighbors, who will later meet with the Taliban government. Amir Khan Mutaki, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, is on a visit. Other participating countries are Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
