NBA star LeBron James plans to compete with the best at the Paris Olympics. But other victories in the basketball world are no longer awarded to the United States.
EThere are few American athletes who have the courage to publicly challenge the confidence-inducing arrogance of certain sports in America. That’s why three-time sprint world champion Noah Lyles’ statement caused quite a stir in his home country a few weeks ago. It pains him, he said at a press conference at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest about what he saw in the NBA Finals. Winners there want to wear the words ‘World Champion’ on their heads. Lyles asked, “What’s a world champion? From America?” “Don’t get me wrong,” he added. He loves America. “But it’s not the world.”
After a few days it became clear how justified the criticism of his comrades was. At the Basketball World Cup in East Asia, the U.S. delegation suffered three losses during the tournament and finished in fourth place. Most Notable Defeat: Defeat in the semi-finals against Germany, who narrowly defeated the favorites in encouraging collective basketball (113:111).
