“LEGOLAND California is thrilled to bring this one-of-a-kind attraction to Carlsbad, California, to kick off one of the greatest vacation seasons ever,” said Kurt Stokes, President of LEGOLAND California Resorts. How exciting Formula 1 racing can be, and we look forward to giving our guests a taste of that experience here in the park.”
The focal point of the opening was a life-size Ferrari F40 in bright red developed by the LEGO Group and unique in the world. The LEGO model took a team of master model builders over 3,800 hours and over 350,000 LEGO pieces. The model is 4 meters long, 2 meters wide, 1.2 meters high and weighs more than 1,360 kg. As the permanent visible component of the attraction’s “garage,” guests can sit in a full-size Ferrari F40 and have their photos taken.
In LEGO® Ferrari Build and Race, guests can build, test drive and race their very own LEGO Ferrari. Inspired by fun facts about Ferrari, racing history, and prizes displayed in the ‘Garage’, young racers can unleash their creativity as they head to the build and test area to create their own LEGO Ferrari – they build a car they can then drive on one of three test tracks, each presenting Guests have different obstacles and challenges and a chance to set the fastest time.
After their cars are meticulously tuned, guests head to the race zone and use digital technology developed by Dimensional Innovations, a leading provider of immersive and immersive experiences, to digitally scan their cars and compete in virtual races to determine the fastest time. Guests can digitally modify their LEGO vehicle to match engine size, tire specifications, performance and aerodynamics, customize the license plate and even add stickers.
Once inside the ‘track’, the LEGO Ferrari Build and Race is interactive and challenging as racers must adapt to changing track conditions due to weather, wind, temperature and wind speed. Guests have three laps to set their best time using the touchpads to give their car extra acceleration and beat opponents in side kicks. Families can follow the action on the upper screens from a bird’s-eye view, and the leaderboards show the status of the races in progress and the best shows on track day.
The journey continues at the DUPLO® Build Zone, where younger guests can unleash their imaginations and create their own creations from even larger bricks. A member of the LEGO Team will also be on hand to share fun facts about Ferrari and racing history, as well as give away LEGO racing gear and trophies.
