The Bundesliga football match between FSV Mainz 05 and 1 has been cancelled. FC Union Berlin on Friday evening due to winter weather conditions and risks to spectator safety. The German Football League announced this on Thursday. The operator of the Mewa Arena in Mainz has closed the stadium.
The League Association statement said: “The reason for this is the formation of dense ice in the lower layers, especially in the parking area and on travel roads, and the risks associated with the safety of spectators.” A new date for the game will be announced soon. All match tickets remain valid.
This is the second away match for the Berlin club that was canceled due to weather this season. Köpenik's match against defending champion Bayern Munich was canceled at the beginning of December last year due to the onset of a harsh winter in the Bavarian capital. Unlike before the match in Munich, the Berlin team had not yet traveled for the first leg, but were still in Berlin, the club confirmed.
