Roma also started their European journey with three points, as the Italians scored 2-1 (1-0) at the Sheriff Tiraspol Stadium.
Roma struggled in Tiraspol, with Leandro Paredes scoring the opening goal shortly before half-time (45+4). Cristian Tovar then equalized (57), but Romelu Lukaku (65) decided the match in favor of Roma.
A match between Ajax and Marseille
Ajax Amsterdam and Olympique Marseille also tied 3-3 (2-2) later in the evening. However, new international Pascal Gross and Brighton & Hove Albion had to concede a 2:3 (1:2) defeat to AEK Athens.
Ajax took an early lead over Marseille through Carlos Borges (9) and Steven Berghuis (20), but Jonathan Klaus (23) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (38) equalized before the end of the first half. Thanks to Kenneth Taylor (52), Amsterdam took the lead again shortly after the start of the second half, but it was Aubameyang (78) who scored the final goal.
Brighton continued to fall behind. Djibril Sidibe (11) and Mijat Jačinovic (40) led Greece twice, but Joao Pedro equalized the score from a penalty kick (30/67). The decision was made shortly before the end by Ezequiel Pons (85).
