London Zoo has dismantled an artwork by British artist Banksy and replaced it with a replica. The image shows a gorilla raising a camera shutter and apparently releasing other animals. The artwork, which appeared last week, is the ninth and final in a series Banksy has posted on Instagram.
It has now been replaced by a replica, the PA news agency reported. The zoo announced the move to Platform X. A sign said the artwork had been removed from public view to preserve it and restore full use of the entrance.
The zoo wrote that the next steps still need to be determined. “We apologize for any disappointment, but we hope you can enjoy the joy and creativity of Banksy's wonderful works here.”
The anonymous Banksy unveiled nine images of animals, including an ibex, three monkeys and two pelicans, on the front of a fish and chip shop. However, public art is vulnerable to vandalism and theft. A masked man painted a picture of a rhinoceros just hours after the unveiling. Unknown assailants also dismantled a satellite dish featuring a wolf howling.
The City of London said the police station housing the piranhas was initially cordoned off for fear it would be destroyed and then moved to a safe location. A big cat on a billboard was also removed shortly after for safety reasons. The owner has promised to donate the work to an art gallery.
