Results Report 84 Tour of Switzerland
13.06.2021 | (rsn) – Gino Meader (victor of Bahrain) won the final stage of the Tour de Suisse after an attack on the top of Tremola Street on Gotthard Pass in a duel against Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) after a quick landing in Andermatt. The 24-year-old, who had only met Woods on landing, finally ran the Canadian while seated. The third of the day was nine seconds behind group favorites Mattia Cattaneo (Deceuninck – Quick-Step).
Simultaneously with Cattaneo, Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) crossed the finish line in fifth, defending his yellow jersey against Rigoberto Uran (EF Education – Nippo), who attacked him unsuccessfully on Tremola Street but could not shake off the Ecuadorean. Carabaz won the Tour de Suisse by 17sec on Uranium and 1:15min ahead of Jacob Fuglsang (Astana – Premier Tech).
The Dane arrived in Andermatt at the same time with Karabaz and Oran and overtook Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the overall standings because the German lost twelve seconds. Schachmann was left behind multiple times in Gotthard Pass, fought his way through a few times, and then, shortly before the top of the pass, could no longer continue.
However, in the landing, he did not give up, but chased after the group of favorites and almost came back again. But then Vogelsang raised his pace again and kept the former German champions at bay, until he finally missed the podium by four seconds.
While Carabaz celebrated the overall win, the smaller order went to teammate Eddie Dunbar of Ireland. Woods received the mountain classification and Stefan Bisiger (EF Education – Nippo) won the points classification.
