After runners-up Kapfenberg Bulls the day before, Swans Gmunden kicked off the new season of the Basketball Premier League (BSL) on Sunday with a home defeat.
The defending champion and Super Cup winner had to admit defeat against Flyers Wales in the Upper Austria derby with 69:89 (38:40). Saturday’s Kapfenberger game against Klosterneuburg Dukes was much closer with 77:78 including the decider with 33 seconds left.
Wells withdraws in the third quarter
If the duel between Gmunden and Wales was at eye level before the break, the guests had advanced decisively in the third division to 64:50.
In the last quarter, the Flyers, led by new American duo Samuel Orff (22 points) and James Lull (17 points, 13 rebounds), extended their tally even further. The success was historic, as Wales had never been able to win at Gmunden before.
Obervaert wins the Traiskirchen
The Oberwart Gunners were also able to celebrate an away victory. Burgenland gave the Traiskirchen Lions no chance at 91:63. BC Vienna retained control of its local rival Vienna DC Timberwolves with a score of 87:67. UBSC Graz also scored a home win of 82:68 against SKN St. Polten.
