Matteo Berrettini has won the ATP 250 tennis tournament in Kitzbühel for the first time. The 28-year-old Italian won Saturday's final against Frenchman Hugo Gaston in 1:21 hours (7:5.6:3) and thus won the €630,705 clay-court tournament in Tyrol without dropping a set. Berrettini, who is currently ranked 50th in the world, could look forward to €88,125 and 250 points in prize money. Gaston, 23, also lost his second final on the tour.
“I’m very happy and very tired. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks,” said Berrettini, who also won the claycourt tournament in Gstaad last week. The former world number six, who suffered an ankle injury at the 2023 US Open and then had to take a longer break, has won 10 matches in a row without dropping a set. “It was a really tough match,” Berrettini added after his 10th ATP title and third of the year.
The 2021 Wimbledon finalist served well and got a serve from Gaston in the first set to make it 6:5. In the second round, he faced the world number 91 favorite. He quickly went up 5:2. Gaston managed to get a break, but in the end the 23-year-old was left in tears after losing his second final after Gstaad 2021.
The tournament in Kitzbühel will continue in the future under the name “Generali Open”. As the organizers announced during the individual final, the cooperation with the title sponsor and main sponsor has been extended for another three years until 2027.
