Middle East: US Reaffirms Support for Two-State Solution

The US has reiterated its support for a two-state solution following a resolution passed in Israel's parliament against “the creation of a Palestinian state”. “I think the best way to respond is to reaffirm our strong belief in the authority and promise of a two-state solution,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Thursday.

He declined to comment directly on the Knesset vote. Kirby said the US would “continue to do everything” to achieve a two-state solution.

America is an essential ally of Israel. On Thursday night, the Israeli parliament passed a resolution with symbolic effect that “categorically” rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank or Gaza Strip. It was tabled by a right-wing opposition MP and passed by 68 votes to nine. The vote comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to address the US Congress next week.
