In Moldova, tens of thousands demonstrated today for joining the European Union. Police said more than 75,000 people gathered for a rally in the center of the capital, Chisinau. “We have come to say loudly, with confidence and pride that Moldova’s place is in the European Union,” said Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who called the demonstration.
The head of state said that her country wants to join the European Union by 2030. “This is an opportunity for our people to live in peace and prosperity,” Sandu said. Meeting the necessary criteria for membership is “the way to go”, but “the only way”.
The country, with a population of 2.6 million, is a candidate for EU membership in June 2022, just like neighboring Ukraine. Moldova’s membership is insurance against becoming Moscow’s next target after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, pro-Russian demonstrations do occur regularly in Moldova. In addition, Moscow has already deployed soldiers to the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria in Moldova.
