More Diversity: 395 New Oscar Academy Members

The Oscar Academy wants to become more diverse and has invited many women, minorities and international filmmakers as new members. 395 artists have been chosen to vote in the future when awarding the Academy Awards. 46 percent of invitations went to women, about 40 percent to underrepresented ethnic groups, and more than half went to international filmmakers, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday.

The association, which now has more than 9,000 members, is striving for more diversity after years of wrangling over a lack of diversity. This year, 25 Academy Award winners and actors from 49 countries are on the invitation list. Among the 12 cast members selected are Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova (“Borat Anschluss Moviefilm”) and South Korean Academy Award winner Yoon Yeoh-jung (“Minari”).
