Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are increasing in Afghanistan. Experts blame the climate crisis for this.
According to official information, the number of deaths after floods in northern Afghanistan continued to rise. The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said the number of victims reached 315 on Sunday. There was initially no information available about the number of missing or injured people. According to reports, Baghlan province is the most affected, followed by the neighboring provinces of Tahir and Badakhshan.
International relief organization Save the Children warned on Sunday that children were particularly affected by the incident. They estimate that 600,000 people, including 310,000 children, live in the five most affected areas of Baghlan province. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his sadness at the loss of so many lives, according to his spokesman.
Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are increasing in Afghanistan. Experts blame the climate crisis for this. After decades of wars and conflicts, the country is completely unprepared to deal with the consequences of climate change. Since the Islamic Taliban came to power in August 2021, international cooperation with the South Asian country has been severely restricted. (APA/DPA)
