Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal was knocked out in the round of 16 of the ATP Championships in Barcelona on Wednesday. The same thing happened with Austrian Yuri Rodionov in Munich.
Rafael Nadal, a 12-time winner of the event in Barcelona, lost to Alex de Minaur 5:7, 1:6, making him the first Australian to win on clay against Nadal. He, in turn, returned from an injury that lasted more than three months in the Catalan capital. After the match, Styrian Sebastian Offner plays against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
With his opening win on Tuesday in what could be his last appearance in Barcelona against Italian Flavio Copoli alone, Nadal has moved up more than 100 places and will appear outside the top 500 in the world rankings. The Iberian needs a place in the top 400 by June 10 to secure his Olympic ticket. This is based on a new rule that favors two Grand Slam winners. It also seems like Dominic Thiem is hoping to get that pass at the moment, but “just” a major title might not be enough for him.
Meanwhile, Austrian Yuri Rodionov also suffered a round-of-16 defeat on the ATP Tour on Wednesday. He lost in Munich to German local champion Alexander Zverev 6:7 (3), 2:6. (Abba)
