Next generation Anvil in Assassin's Creed Shadows

Next generation Anvil in Assassin's Creed Shadows

Ubisoft's “new” engine.

The latest offshoot of the Assassin's Creed series, which was delayed at short notice to 2025, aims to offer the openness and breadth of Odyssey or more recently Valhalla and transports the scenario to feudal Japan; known so far. But when it comes to the underlying technology, we have news. After the Snowdrop engine was used in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws, the famous Anvil engine is now also getting a “next-gen” upgrade. With ray tracing and a whole host of exciting features built in.

Plus in dynamism, plus in liveliness

The primary focus, and unifying commonality of the Anvil update, is “Dynamics”. Engine-powered games — especially the new Assassin's Creed Shadows — should be more vibrant, more diverse, and more interactive. To achieve this, the revamped Anvil uses a whole host of new abilities. Given the amount of innovations, it is not easy for us to find a starting point, but one of the “biggest” additions to the Assassin's Creed series with Shadows is the dynamically changing seasons. In feudal Japan, you will be able to explore very different environments in spring, summer, autumn and winter, and when the season changes and very different weather conditions are implemented, other capabilities of the new graphics engine are used. The developers – both at Gamescom and in an interview – called Shadows' greatly expanded engine “Anvil.”
